Dr. Rossi escorts Rachel to the police station where Elliot glares at her without an ounce of forgiveness. Rossi reminds him that Rachel is sick, and she did return Matthew without harm, but Elliot isn't swayed. Steven and Rossi interview Rachel, who tells them the story of how she found the bracelet. She confuses this event with the death of her parents in a fire. Rossi realizes that as a child, Rachel accidentally started the fire that took the lives of her mother and father. She then went to live with her sadistic aunt, who tortured her about the fire. Rachel asks why everyone keeps calling her "Rachel" when her name is "Allison". Rossi explains that Rachel's desire to be loved was so great that she assumed Allison's identity to gain Connie and Elliot's love. Steven prepares to send Rachel to a mental hospital outside of Peyton Place. Rodney visits her at the courthouse. He promises that he'll come and visit her. Still thinking herself to be Allison, Rachel asks why he loved Betty Anderson instead of her. Rodney kisses her tenderly. She tells him not to say he loves her because she knows that he won't mean it. Rita brings Rachel's suitcase to the courthouse, but Rossi won't let her see Rachel as it would be too upsetting for them both. He admits to Rita that her friend is mentally ill. Rossi and a matron lead Rachel to a waiting police car, but she runs across the street where Connie is watching. Rachel clings to her, calling her "Mother". She asks Connie to visit her in the hospital. Connie humors her by agreeing, but Rachel comments sadly that her "father" won't. Rachel and Rossi get in the police car and begin to drive away. Seeing Elliot standing in front of The Clarion, Rachel requests that the escort stop the car. Elliot walks over to the passenger window. Rachel begs him to hold on to her bracelet for her. He reluctantly takes it, a look of remorse on his face. Rachel looks at him lovingly as they drive away.moreless
