AIRED:
In New York, Betty applies at an employment agency, but she refuses to give hometown references. The employment counselor realizes Betty is in over her head and suggests she go back to Peyton Place. Betty leaves in tears and meets a beautiful young woman named Sharon Purcell in the corridor. Sharon invites Betty for coffee, correctly surmising that the small-town girl could use a friend. At the Harrington mansion, Leslie is anxious to see Laura leave. She gets drunk on brandy and laments how quickly life passes. Laura urges Norman to accept the fact that his mother is gone, then advises Rodney to make a decision about his marriage and his life. Laura exits, stating that she's leaving Peyton Place with a lot of luggage and a hopeful heart. Elliot has a ginger ale at Ada's Tavern. He and Ada discuss the past, which Ada suggests he forget. Elliot guesses that Ada knows who Elizabeth was having an affair with when she was killed and demands that Ada tell him since that man is probably the real murderer. Ada tells him to "let sleeping dogs lie", reminding him that he's on parole, and people are scrutinizing his behavior. Rodney stops by the Mackenzie house after taking Laura to the train station. He attempts to talk to Allison, who is leaving for the library, but she brushes him off. Connie asks to speak with Rodney alone. She insists that he not bother Allison, adding that his life will work out fine if he's patient and gives it a chance. Rodney reassures Connie that she doesn't have to worry about his influence because she instilled her values in Allison. They part warmly. At the library, Elliot helps Allison with a mountain of books. They discuss their mutual admiration for Oscar Wilde and poetry. Allison admits that her poetry lacks conviction because she hasn't experienced life. Elliot replies that being isolated -locked away from life- is also a form of experience. He walks her out of the library as they enjoy a friendly chat.moreless
