AIRED:
Leslie calls Ada's looking for Eddie. Ada tells him that Eddie was feeling ill and was put up at Rita and Norman's for the night; however, Rita awakens to find that Eddie is gone. Ada cuts off a drunken Steven, urging him to go home. They discuss their marriages. Steven jokes that he intends to become a Peeping Tom, spying on Peyton Place residents until he learns the secret of a good marriage. He asks Ada if a man and a woman can live together. She says no, but they can't live apart either. On the eve of his marriage to Adrienne, Martin has a bachelor's supper brought to him on a tray by Lee. Martin admits that he has to marry Adrienne because some crimes can't be punished any other way. He gives Lee an expensive watch intended for Rodney, adding that unlike his grandson, Lee's humble origins have made him a man. Lee is touched and promises that anyone who wants to hurt Martin will have to go through him. Betty arrives at the mansion and finds Adrienne sipping brandy in the dark. They begin to quarrel about Steven. Betty demands to know what really happened in Boston the night she saw Steven emerge from Martin's city townhouse. Adrienne admits that nothing happened. She intentionally let Betty think that she and Steven had slept together because she knew she had a 50/50 chance of destroying their marriage. Betty follows Adrienne to the landing at the top of the stairs where their fight becomes more vicious. Betty hurls insults at her rival. Adrienne turns to slap her, loses her balance, and tumbles violently down the stairs. Betty slowly walks to her motionless body, crumpled like a rag doll at the bottom of the staircase. Unable to rouse her, Betty runs from the mansion; however, Eddie is hiding outside and watches her vanish into the night.moreless
