    • World War Z

At the end of the episode, we see that there is a large wall around all of Danville which is surrounded by countless Doofenshmirtz zombies. This is a reference to various such cities in fiction, but especially to Jerusalem in the novel and movie World War Z.

    • The Grudge

The horror movie that Stacey watches, The Grievance, is a reference to the Japanese horror franchise (and its American remakes) The Grudge.

    • Die Hard

After Baljeet is turned, Buford takes off his protective gear and runs off to lure the Doofenshmirtz zombies away from the others and shouts "Yippie ki-yay you pharmacist freaks!" Heinz does the same thing after Perry and Vanessa are turned. These are a reference to (and family-friendly version of) a catchphrase uttered by John McClane in the 1981 movie Die Hard.

    • Hunchback of Notre Dame When the kids are running from the Doofenshmirtz zombies towards the D.E.I. tower, Buford screams "sanctuary!" This is a reference to the 1831 novel Hunchback of Notre Dame in which the titular hunchback Quasimodo screams the same thing to the angry townsfolk after rescuing Esmeralda from being hung and takes her up to the tower.

    • I Am Legend

This episode is based both directly and indirectly in various ways on the 1953 novel I Am Legend, particularly the story about a sort-of zombie apocalypse.

    • Omega Man

When Carl refers to Perry as the "Omega Platypus", it is a reference to the 1971 film "Omega Man" which was a film adaptation of the the 1953 novel I Am Legend.

    • Night of the Living Dead

The title is based on the 1968 zombie classic Night of the Living Dead, which in turn was inspired by the 1954 novel I Am Legend.

    • Shaun of the Dead
Among those who are affected by Doof's inator are Shaun and Ed, whose characters are reprised in animated form by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who starred in the cult hit 2004 zombie comedy movie.
