  • Trivia

  • Quotes

    • (A commercial for launching the Brainy Cigarettes brand is shown, with the Brain playing Brainy the Elf, strolling over a bridge and down a path in a fairy tale-esque landscape while smoking a cigarette butt...)
      Brain: (singing) Laa-la-la-la-laaaa la-la-la-la-la-la-laa-laa-laaaa!
(A little boy and girl come up on the bridge and spot the Brain...)
Girl: There goes Brainy! (she and the boy chase after the Brain...)
Brain: Always after my pack of smokes! (takes a drag) That's rich, cool, smooth flavor. (coughs a bit)
(The Brain runs onto a net snare trap and is caught, and the kids catch up to him.)
Boy: Gotcha, Brainy! Now hand over the happy sticks!
Brainy: (laughs) You kids aren't old enough to smoke! But when you are, make your brand Brainy Cigarettes! (shows a pack of Brainy Cigarettes to the camera)
Kid Chorus: (singing) Brainy Cigarettes, not for kids,
but for the kids in you!

    • (A commercial pitch for Lumberjack Cigarettes is played, with a stereotypical brawny male lumberjack chopping down a giant redwood tree while smoking a cigarette...)
Lumberjack: Timberrrr! (the tree comes crashing down) When I need a break from chopping down those four thousand-year-old redwoods, I turn to lumberjack cigarettes. (takes a drag on his cigarette) Ahh... pure taste of burning leaves! When you want to feel that tar going deep into your lungs, try Lumberjack Cigarettes. (winks at the camera and continues smoking)
      Chorus: (singing)
      Lumberjacks are swell,
And they make your clothes smell.
      Above and beneath,
They leave (cough!) stains on your teeth!
Pick the leaves of dead tobacco,
      Chop 'em up for Lumberjack-o,
Rolled up tight and lit on fire,
Suck 'em down 'till you expire!
      So when you get yens
      For those carcinogens,
      The Lumberjacks you bought
      Taste like (cough!) cigarettes ought!

    • This cartoon was first aired as part of episode 54. The gag credit for this episode is: Fuliginous - smoky or sooty place.

  • Allusions

    • The episode plays on several real life controverseys involving cigarettes. Brain being a cartoony spokesman meant to get kids smoking refers to Camel cigarette's mascot Camel Joe. The company was accused of using Camel Joe to lure children into smoking, and after enough pressure they eventually dropped it.

The courtroom scene where judges question the cigarette makers about missing nicotine research documents mirrors real life court cases where big tabacco companies were accused of forging documents and bribing politicians to cover the addictiveness of their products.

Brain's desire to take down the cigarette company for getting him addicted is a nod to Wayne McLaren, one of the actors in the Marlboro Man ad campain who joined anti-smoking movements and sued Marlboro Cigarettes after contracting lung cancer.

    • The commercial where kids try to catch Brainy the Elf to get his cigarettes is a nod to similar commercials for Lucky Charms cereal, where kids chase after a leprechaun to get his Lucky Charms.

    • The episode's title is a reference to Inherit the Wind, a 1955 Broadway play that attempted to warn against the evils of McCarthyism through a fictionalized account of the Scopes Monkey Trial.

The play's name comes from the Bible, specifically Proverbs 11:29: "He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart."
