In this episode of Pioneers, NHL legend Johnny Bower sits with Dan Moriarty to discuss his career as a professional hockey player. Born in 1924 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Johnny Bower served in World War II with the Canadian Army. Upon his return to Canada, he joined the AHL, spending most of his early career (without a helmet) in the 1940s and 50s with the Cleveland Barons, and was such an outstanding goal tender that he developed the nickname, "The China Wall." In 1953, he was picked up by the NHL to play for The New York Rangers, and in 1958 was chosen to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He spent the rest of his hockey career, a full eleven seasons, with the Leafs, winning three consecutive Stanley Cup victories with the team from 1962-1964. In 1969, at age 44, he was the oldest goalie ever to perform in a Stanley Cup playoff. A true hockey hero, Johnny Bower was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976.moreless
