Mollie tells Willy that the forerunner did mean someone would die. A service is held for Allan MacKinnon. He (or an empty casket) is buried. Mr. Frawley and Mr. Crowe, his boss, are having a party. When Ned confronts Mr. Frawley for not attending the funeral and says he warned Frawley something was wrong in that tunnel, Frawley warns him again that the MacLean family will lose their home. (The company house that they have lived in for all of Willie's life, probably all of Nellie's life too.) Nellie tells Ned that he shouldn't have confronted Frawley. Ned tells Willie he knew something was wrong but he didn't do anything and now he feels guilty. Rose apologizes to Nellie for not going to the funeral but she came to Glace Bay (from Halifax) for a wedding not a funeral. Aunt Rose tells Ned that some people are so full of themselves that they forget about the feelings of others. (Pot, Kettle.) Willie tells Nellie about the forerunner telling him everything will turn out. Ned tells Nellie that he will not stir up anymore trouble with Frawley. On the way to work, Ned says the mine doesn't close down. Willie says it should if only for a minute or two. Ned says he can not afford to be singled out as a rabble rouser. Frawley wants to close level 2 until it is fully drained. Crowe threatens to change things from the top down. Willie, Angus and Mollie talk. Since baseball is what Allan loves most (other than the ladies, since he had girlfriends "coming out of the woodwork") they agree on baseball. Frawley makes a speech. He closes the west section of level 2 but keeps the rest of the mine and specifically the rest of that level (which is what Crowe wanted) operating. He sends the men who work in the West section of level 2 home. Ned is happy (or satisfied) until he sees Crowe is happy. The boys from level 2 play baseball. Spider, on level 3, plays "hookey" when Mollie calls him a chicken and also plays baseball. Willie says they are playing in honor of Allan Mackinnon. When the older men notice the trapper boys are not in the mine they start leaving. At the game Mollie points out two women and claims they were both Allan's girlfriends. 2 on and 2 out. Willie is up. Mollie says it would be helpful if Willie hit the ball. Despite Ned's coaching in an earlier episode, Spider strikes out Willie. A foreman tells Frawley that the mine boys have walked out and he has let the men go home. The mine is except for a rat. Frawley goes to the game and tells the boys that the mine has gone down and they must go back to work or be fired. Ned says Allan deserved some recognition and that the mine should be closed for repairs. Someone starts chanting Allan, Allan and everyone joins in. Nellie says that Willy and Ned are cut from the same cloth and she doesn't know whether to cheer or cry. Crowe tells Frawley to fire Ned. Crowe fires Ned and says the MacLeans have a week to move out of their house.moreless

Spider, Willie, Mollie and Angus are spending the night in a haunted house. Because Spider has dared the other three. Ned is worried about the safety of a mine section. Ned says he would be fired if he complains alone. He asks his co-workers, including Sam and D'arcy, to band together but they won't. So he complains to Nellie and Rose. Rose subtlely notes. At the haunted house, Spider thinks? he hears someone calling him. He sees a painting and he runs away with Willie's lamp which he borrowed. The others don't know he ran. Rose offers to look after the children while Ned and Nellie go on a honeymoon. There won't be one. Ned could barely get Saturday off for the wedding. Rose talks about her two months of honeymooning in Europe. (With her Thomas) Willie starts to go upstairs to look for Spider and Mollie says don't. The three call out for Spider. It starts to rain and thunder. Rose talks of sending out invitations to the reception and Nellie says people know and will just come. Rose calls them freeloaders. Nellie is sewing her own wedding dress. Her two little sisters say it isn't fancy enough. Rose looks at a picture of Nellie's mother in her wedding dress. A dress that Rose bought. Nellie says she never saw that dress. At the haunted house, a leak from the roof puts out the fire in the stove. So the kids are in the dark. Mollie doesn't think her mother will notice she is missing. Mollie says she will almost be disappointed if she does not see a ghost. Rose finds? or pulls? out a box from under a bed and shakes her head. It is morning. The three kids start to leave. Willie hears something upstairs and goes to investigate in the daylight. Outside his horse is acting skittish. The ghost of Willie's father appears and tells Willie it will be fine. They walk back with Angus on the pony, Sable. Willie tells Mollie about seeing his father. Mollie says it was a forerunner and something is about to happen. Spider passes by and gives Willie the lamp he ran off with. They say they won the dare and that Spider did not scare them by making the noises. Spider says he wasn't sucker enough to stay out in the rain. (D'arcy is the tall miner.) A co-worker, Allan, offers to take some extra shifts in Ned's name to give him a couple of days off for the honeymoon. Ned thanks him. Rose has found (or brought?) her sister's (Nellie's mother's) wedding dress. Rose says she may not always agree with Nellie but she will always stand behind her. Ned arrives and sees Nellie in the wedding dress through the window. When Ned comes in Nellie hides behind Aunt Rose saying it is bad luck to see the bride in her dress before the wedding. In the mine, as Ned and Allan walk, the roof caves in and water pours in. Ned gets out. Allan does not. A boss closes a door and braces it. Ned cannot go back to look for Allan. Allan is lying down and not moving. Outside (the mine) Ned tells Nellie and Willie that we lost Allan.moreless

Nellie, Willie, Maggie and Sarah go to meet their Aunt Rose at the train station. Only Nellie knows what she looks like. Mrs. MacTavish expounds. (Via gossip.) Rose married rich Mr. Clark in Halifax. Rose arrives on the train. Willie is almost 13. Nellie and Willie are struggling to carry all of Aunt Rose's bags as they walk home with Aunt Rose. Rose is a MacDonald from Judique. (?) At a party Rose discovers that Ned is a miner, not a farmer as Nellie had implied in her letter. Ned is upset but Nellie says she wanted her only relative here for her wedding. And it is true they are looking for land. (Or did Ned lie?) Nellie apologizes for lying to Rose but says she wanted Rose there for her wedding. Ned is working in a tunnel with with the bottom covered in water. Ned says that the tunnel is unsafe and asks Cap to tell management. Ned is told that he will be working this Saturday so he will have to put the wedding off. Ned tells Nellie. Willie is a lousy baseball player his sisters point out, almost with glee. Willie asks Ned to throw him practice pitches but Ned has to go work a shift. Ned tells Nellie that the mine has to come first or they will be living in the streets. Nellie says she knows. Willie (who without Ned, would be working back in the pit) asks Nellie and she says she still plans to get married. Aunt Rose tells Nellie that this is the first in a lifetime of disappointments. Frawley calls in Ned and says he hears Ned has been complaining. Ned says no but the tunnel should be closed down. Frawley warns Ned not to cause trouble and asks if Ned wants to be out of a job when he gets married. Willies complains and whines to Charley. He wanted Ned to take time to teach him baseball. Ned shows up at Charley's. Nellie tells Anne she has doubts about marrying Ned. She arrives at Charley's in time to see Ned coaching Willie. Ned says he talked to the church and they talk and decide to get married Saturdaymoreless

    • The Light to the Future
There's a storm of emotion for the MacLean family under the sunny skies of the Miner's Picnic.
    • The Light to the Future (Pilot)
Spider beats up Willie, a slightly larger boy. A boy (Angus) and a girl (both smaller than Willie or Spider) are cheering for for Willie. Two larger boys are cheering for Spider. Spider is a pit boy while Willie attends school. The girl, Molly, kicks one of the larger boys with Spider. Willie says he has been training for weeks and is not going to back out. Ned Hall asks Mr. Frawley to put him on the mine face with Allan MacKinnon as his partner. Ned arrives for dinner at Nellie's. He has gotten the job at the face, which is a more dangerous job, but it pays more. Ned says they can get married on Saturday. Nellie says he hasn't even asked. After she sends him outside he asks. Her little sisters Maggie and Sarah chant yes yes yes. Her younger brother, Willie, asks Nellie if she is going to accept. She says she won't be taken for granted. Willie asks who will pay the rent. Nellie says Willie won't have to go back to work in the mine but she won't say yes to Ned just to keep their house. A fiddler practices and a girl step dances. Charley and Jeremiah expound. (do exposition.) It is the miner's picnic. Charley is hiding from the widow MacTavish. Charley does not want to be a judge for the step dancing, saying the he is a singer. But when he sees Mrs. MacTavish coming he grabs the judges badge and ducks under the wooden stage to hide. Willie is going to have his horse Sable compete. When he sees Spider he runs and hides leaving Molly McIntyre and Angus to brush Sable. Angus (who is smaller than anyone) decides to run and hide too. A group of young women are step dancing on the stage in a line. Little girls watch and step dance on the grass. Charley and Willie are both hiding under the wooden stage. Charley is wearing a judges badge and claiming he is judging by listening. (He is still hiding from widow MacTavish.) Anne Harper, the school teacher from Boston, is entering her clam Chowder in the cooking contest. Mrs. MacTavish doesn't think someone from Boston can prepare a good chowder. And people from Boston are hoity toity she tells Nellie. Mrs. MacTavish suggests that Nellie not waste time and grab onto Ned. A woman with a baby, Flora McClure, walks by. Mrs. MacTavish tells Nellie the story of Flora McClure as she tastes the chowders. Flora McClure's husband was killed when his faulty lamp went out and he was crawling back in total darkness by feel back to the rake to be picked up. But he got ran over by the rake since the driver who didn't see him. Now the company has evicted her and her baby, turned them out of her house. And there is another baby on the way. Nellie is worried about...??? the dangerous promotion Ned has taken. Mrs. MacTavish wonders why Nellie hasn't been thrown out of her house. Nellie explains that Ned has been paying the rent. Mrs. MacTavish has selected the best chowder. She takes a second taste. Nellie points out that it is Miss Harper's chowder. Mrs. MacTavish is surprised. Willie and Spider race their horses. The horses are pulling weights (a large set of boards) which drag behind them. Sable takes the lead. Willie is unwilling to use the switch on Sable. Willie drops his switch. Spider switches his horse liberally and passes Willie and wins. Charley sings. (He is ok but a group of people listen.) Mrs. MacTavish says he has the voice of an angel to Miss Harper who agrees. Mrs. MacTavish gives Miss Harper the blue ribbon for her clam chowder and says she must have been taking lessons from a local. As Ned asks Nellie to marry him, Nellie recounts losing her grandfather, brother and father to the pit. (Her father was alive at the end of the movie.) Mrs. McClure walks by and they give her condolences. Flora says they killed him and threw her out of her house. She hates the pit. Ned agrees to go for a farm if that is what Nellie wants. Miss Harper says she is proud of Willie and she gives Willie her blue ribbon. Spider sees and he takes it and rides off. Willie chases him on Sable. Willie grabs the blue ribbon as Sable passes Spider and his horse. Mr. Frawley gives a speech. It is around 1900. The mine is planning to start using electricity as he demonstrates by turning on some lights. Ned proproses again and Nellie says yes.moreless
