Episode Summary

The Ball Game
Mollie tells Willy that the forerunner did mean someone would die. A service is held for Allan MacKinnon. He (or an empty casket) is buried. Mr. Frawley and Mr. Crowe, his boss, are having a party. When Ned confronts Mr. Frawley for not attending the funeral and says he warned Frawley something was wrong in that tunnel, Frawley warns him again that the MacLean family will lose their home. (The company house that they have lived in for all of Willie's life, probably all of Nellie's life too.) Nellie tells Ned that he shouldn't have confronted Frawley. Ned tells Willie he knew something was wrong but he didn't do anything and now he feels guilty. Rose apologizes to Nellie for not going to the funeral but she came to Glace Bay (from Halifax) for a wedding not a funeral. Aunt Rose tells Ned that some people are so full of themselves that they forget about the feelings of others. (Pot, Kettle.) Willie tells Nellie about the forerunner telling him everything will turn out. Ned tells Nellie that he will not stir up anymore trouble with Frawley. On the way to work, Ned says the mine doesn't close down. Willie says it should if only for a minute or two. Ned says he can not afford to be singled out as a rabble rouser. Frawley wants to close level 2 until it is fully drained. Crowe threatens to change things from the top down. Willie, Angus and Mollie talk. Since baseball is what Allan loves most (other than the ladies, since he had girlfriends "coming out of the woodwork") they agree on baseball. Frawley makes a speech. He closes the west section of level 2 but keeps the rest of the mine and specifically the rest of that level (which is what Crowe wanted) operating. He sends the men who work in the West section of level 2 home. Ned is happy (or satisfied) until he sees Crowe is happy. The boys from level 2 play baseball. Spider, on level 3, plays "hookey" when Mollie calls him a chicken and also plays baseball. Willie says they are playing in honor of Allan Mackinnon. When the older men notice the trapper boys are not in the mine they start leaving. At the game Mollie points out two women and claims they were both Allan's girlfriends. 2 on and 2 out. Willie is up. Mollie says it would be helpful if Willie hit the ball. Despite Ned's coaching in an earlier episode, Spider strikes out Willie. A foreman tells Frawley that the mine boys have walked out and he has let the men go home. The mine is except for a rat. Frawley goes to the game and tells the boys that the mine has gone down and they must go back to work or be fired. Ned says Allan deserved some recognition and that the mine should be closed for repairs. Someone starts chanting Allan, Allan and everyone joins in. Nellie says that Willy and Ned are cut from the same cloth and she doesn't know whether to cheer or cry. Crowe tells Frawley to fire Ned. Crowe fires Ned and says the MacLeans have a week to move out of their house.moreless
