Planet Earth Diaries gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look as to how the wildly popular Planet Earth series was created. Each episode features a 10-minute feature on how the filming was done for that episode, along with the trials and tribulations that go into capturing stunning film of events never before recorded in nature. For the episode "Pole to Pole," the Planet Earth filmmakers show of the Heligimbal, a gyro-stabilized camera that sits beneath their helicopter that allows them to discreetly shoot aerial shots of wild dogs. In another Planet Earth Diaries segment, for the episode "Mountains," the filmmakers take is through the three year process of getting close-up footage of snow leopards, something never done before. The Planet Earth Diaries segment for "Fresh Water" documents the two-week search in Brazil by the filmmakers to shoot a piranha feeding frenzy. In one of the more remarkable episodes, "Great Plains," the Planet Earth Diaries segment for that episode shows how the filmkakers were able to use infrared light to capture lions hunting an elephant in the darkness of the night.moreless
