  • An epistolary friendship between two dissimilar people who never met - a New York television writer and a London bookseller.

Hugh Whitemore's play was later adapted by him for the stage and then as a 1984 film (starring Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft and Judi Dench). This version, however, is the best, partly because it doesn't try to be more than it is - a simple account of friendship. (The film was, with appalling vulgarity and insensitivity, advertised as "a love story between two people who never met"). Frank Finlay is very fine as the shrewd, quiet, amused bookseller coping with the orders of a keen New York bibliophile, whose love of books (equal to his own) often exceeds her finances. Anne Jackson has a little trouble seeming as young as Helene ought to be in the earlier scenes, but you absolutely believe in her passion for literature.moreless
