  • A scriptwriter interviews an actress over a part in his new TV play, but it's not the usual kind of audition.

Quite a few of Dennis Potter's TV plays give you the impression that Potter must have been a disturbed and mixed-up fellow - certainly this one does. The unhappy, appalled writer character in the play shares Potter's horror at the death of innocence, his disgust with the casual immorality of modern Britain; and Alan Dobie, playing him, is clearly doing an extended Potter impression. But he's also all too obviously fascinated with the things he claims horrify him, and this charge was levelled at Potter often enough in his lifetime. Still, you won't expect the shock-horror ending of the play - did Potter mean it as lacerating self-criticism or as a sneering sick joke? You might not take a charitable view.moreless
