  • At the age of fifty, Harry, an ordinary blue-collar worker, decides to change his life - and his wife.

Colin Welland's excellent, very British play took on a new lease of life fifteen years after this television production when it was turned into an American film, "Twice In A Lifetime", starring Gene Hackman, Ellen Burstyn and Ann-Margret. Welland transposed his subject to an American factory-town setting, and retained the extreme ordinariness of his central characters, but the casting of big Hollywood stars, good as they were, took away the rough edge that gives this original version its gritty, realistic quality. Harry (Bill Maynard) could be anyone, someone you'd meet in a pub or at a bus-stop, the kind of man whose life is mapped out for him when he's still a boy. His quiet insistence on having the life he wants - a life of love, not complacency, of passion, not predictability - is made the more moving by the smallness of his horizons.moreless
