  • A working-class man is humiliated by the upper-crust owner of an expensive hostelry, and seeks revenge.

The British class system gets a thorough going-over in this trenchant anecdote. Poor Michael Regan is just an ordinary proletarian Irishman who wants to give his wife a treat by taking her for a meal at a posh country inn. It's not so much that he can't afford it, more that the landlord doesn't really want "his sort" around his nice place; so Michael is thrown out, and, when he objects, gets a beating. But they picked on the wrong Irishman. An increasingly nasty (and absurd) private war ensues between the two men; although Michael finally gets an apology, it's at the expense of his good name, his marriage, his liberty, and maybe even his sanity. Only the system wins in the end.moreless
