  • Brutality, misogyny and a flagrant cover-up in a remote rural setting in wartime England.

This was a most disturbing play, and it showed a very clear influence - that of Sam Peckinpah's extremely controversial 1971 film, "Straw Dogs". It shares with that movie the idea of a stranger at a loss as to how to proceed in an isolated, hostile community where violence is commonplace and where all kinds of evil can be overlooked, even hidden, if it involves the locals against visitors. In his days as a film critic, author David Pirie had described "Straw Dogs" as "an indispensable Peckinpah masterpiece" - he was one of the very few British critics who didn't revile the film utterly. This has less on-screen violence, and a more straightforward approach to narrative, but its sense of dread and remoteness is quite the equal of that movie - and, being British, Pirie and director Ben Bolt get more of the little details right.moreless
