What a really creepy play this was! One wonders, did the screenwriter of "The Wicker Man" ever see it? The extremely gradual process whereby a complacently agnostic city woman is made to believe that her rustic neighbours are involved in ancient pagan rituals (maybe even including human sacrifice) is mesmerising - and chilling. The slow accumulation of evidence (never quite as conclusive as man's law requires) that something unspeakable is about to happen is made all the more unbearable by the woman's complete removal from an environment she knows - how threatening the idyllic countryside seems. In a fine cast, Bernard Hepton stands out as the soft-spoken, unfailingly polite architect of horror.moreless
