  • A trenchant study of the dangers of nuclear power, and of the dangerousness of the people who control it, in the form of a paranoid thriller.

Six years before Meryl Streep and Mike Nichols took it on, this British TV play told us, in all but name, the story of Karen Silkwood. Oh, the plot is now anglicized with all names changed, but director Michael Apted has been very clear in interviews about the source of writer Stephen Poliakoff's plotline. There are no ambiguities here - from the moment she decides to take on her bosses, the heroine, well played by Francesca Annis, is a doomed woman. The play is ingenious and suspenseful (and the method whereby a phial of plutonium is smuggled out of a nuclear power plant might raise eyebrows even today), but, more than anything else, it's angry. And the things it's angry about are still with us.moreless
