  • Will the neglected wife of a clergyman have an affair with a teenage admirer?

    9.0
Of course she won't - this is, after all, a play by George Bernard Shaw, who was far more interested in talk than in sex. Still, it is made entirely believable and right that Candida (a name carefully chosen) will turn down her 18-year-old admirer and stick with her muscular-Christian husband, who needs her far more than he has ever realised. As so often in Shaw, the woman is smarter than any of the men, and Geraldine McEwan enjoys herself greatly as this decent, clever wife, who is the only character to know exactly what the score is. Timothy Dalton seems just a little too old and too knowing to be entirely believable as the naive Eugene Marchbanks, though.moreless
