  • Brandon Thomas's Victorian farce, transposed to the 1920s as a vehicle for female impersonator Danny La Rue.

    8.0
It was inevitable that, during his late 60s-early 70s heyday, Danny La Rue would end up playing Lord Fancourt Babberley, the Oxonian student who, for reasons to absurd to describe, must, to his considerable discomfort, impersonate his friend Charley's newly-arrived aunt from Brazil ("where the nuts come from"). This very lavish and fairly free adaptation gives La Rue a very impressive supporting cast, moves at a fast clip and gets a good many of the laughs inherent in the play - but there's no getting away from the simple fact that the leading role is actually miscast. The play's reluctant transvestite is not supposed to be convincing, and he's certainly not supposed to be glamorous. It's a droll comedy of awkwardness, not of knowing winks and high camp.moreless
