  • The Gascon fighting man with the extraordinary proboscis can take on any opponent in a duel and win - but can he allow himself to love?

The director of this uneven production, James McTaggart, said at the time that, though Rostand's was often said to contain "a little of everything", what it actually had was a lot of everything. Yes - and that's a little too much for this version, for all the stirring verse and rumbustious action. Eric Porter, seeking to show his range after his stardom-making role in "The Forsyte Saga", is not ideally cast as Cyrano - the flamboyance of this lonely man, whose boasting and bravura are a cover for heartache, doesn't come naturally to him, and no-one who's heard Jose Ferrer declaiming the alexandrines will find Porter a vocal match for the part, either. The play is sure-fire, of course - but this account of it, for all its virtues, doesn't quite have the great emotional fireworks that are essential.moreless
