  • How far is Hedda Gabler - the daughter of a famous general - a monster, and how far a victim?

    9.0
This very fine production of Ibsen's play is dominated, as it should be, by Janet Suzman's marvellous performance in the title role. There had been another production about a decade earlier with Ingrid Bergman as Hedda; that had Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson and Trevor Howard in it, too, but, good as it was, it wasn't as good as this. For one thing, the play hasn't been extensively cut, as that version was; for another, the actors and production team aren't as afraid of censorship. The inexorable progress of Hedda Gabler to her own destruction - even as she seeks to detsroy everything around her - has a horrifying fascination; she seems a dazzling destructive force, but, in the man's world she rebels against, the powers that be are inevitably victorious.moreless
