  • Fictitious adventures of the great actor and Lothario, Edmund Kean - who is said in this play to be 48 years old, even though the real Kean died at 46.

One of the most sheerly enjoyable of Sartre's plays - a rewrite of a 19th-century original by Alexandre Dumas - gets a glossy but not entirely satisfactory production from the BBC. The main problem is Anthony Hopkins, whose performance mostly lacks wit - anyone who saw Alan Badel's phenomenal performance in the same part in a West End revival of 1971 will find him a mediocre substitute. It's been said that Hopkins was unhappy during the recording of this play, quarrelling incessantly with director James Cellan Jones and various other actors, and even walking out (briefly) during rehearsals. One can believe this. The jokes are still pretty good - "When people talk to me about real life, I always think they really mean bad acting" - but something seems to be missing. Robert Stephens doesn't have enough to do, either.moreless
