  • Why has the brilliant, worldly Platonov retreated to the country and taken on a poorly-paid job as a humble village schoolmaster?

Chekhov's first play - written at the age of twenty-one and then hidden away at the bottom of a bureau drawer, where it went undiscovered until after his death - was first staged in English in 1960, giving Rex Harrison a notable success at London's Royal Court Theatre. Here, Harrison (in his British TV acting debut) repeats that success with a superb performance as the clever womaniser afraid that his fascination with women will one day destroy him. The extraordinary thing is that, though the play seems light-hearted and is frequently hilarious, we absolutely know that it must inevitably end with its hero's death. Platonov's death is absurd, but we still feel the tragedy of it deeply. A marvellous production.moreless
