  • If flower-girl Eliza Dolittle can pass herself off as a lady, what will she become?

    7.5
Lynn Redgrave's great skill makes her a very likeable and sympathetic Eliza in this workmanlike but curiously unsparkling production of Shaw's play. She is partnered by a miscast James Villiers as Higgins - there is little warmth in his performance, and he lacks the passion for language and its liberating force that is at the heart of the play. The uncomfortable questions that the play poses - what will happen to Eliza once she learns to "be a lady"? Will she still find herself elaborately constrained by Edwardian society, albeit in a rather different way? - are given little emphasis. This production, incidentally, includes a scene taken, not from the play, but from Shaw's script for the 1938 film, where Higgins confronts his Hungarian rival at the embassy ball.moreless
