  • "O God that madest this beautiful earth, when will it be ready to receive thy saints? How long, O Lord, how long?"

It's hard to imagine a better production of Shaw's play than this one, which, unlike the 1957 movie, gives us the whole thing (or near enough) as Shaw wrote it; and it has one of the most impressive casts the BBC ever assembled for a Shaw production. If Janet Suzman is at the centre of things, as she should be, it's hard to forget Colin Blakely as the awful, but finally heartbreakingly contrite, John de Stogumber; or Keith Baxter as the quietly cynical Dunois ("God is on the side of the big battalions"); or John Gielgud as the Inquisitor, the very last man on earth you would want to be interrogated by.moreless
