  • Henry James's favourite theme - the clash between American innocence and European experience - is perfectly exemplified in this version of his famous novel.

    9.5
The BBC was fond of adapting Henry James, and no-one ever did it better. Although their chief preference was for serialisations of James's complex novels spread over many weeks (their versions of "The Portrait Of A Lady" and "The Golden Bowl" are especially masterly), they would occasionally present single plays derived from his works, and this beautiful version of "The Ambassadors" was probably the best of them. Lee Remick (who played another Jamesian heroine in the film version of "The Europeans") is splendid as the spirited Maria Gostrey, and Paul Scofield has a fine gravitas as Strether; but the finest performance of all is from Delphine Seyrig, who will break your heart as Madame de Vionnet.moreless
