  • The life of a German aristocrat who grows up during the rise of the Nazis, recalled as he nears death after a parachute jump that goes wrong.

Only a few "Play Of The Month" presentations were original plays, rather than theatre classics or adaptations of novels or stories. This arresting but quite horrible play by David Mercer is amongst those few. The corruption of the Junker aristocratic class is vividly presented, and we watch with horror as they are supplanted in power by the Nazis, the by-products of that corruption. John Osborne (rather too old for the part) plays Werner, the young man dominated by his appalling father (a mesmerisingly unpleasant Alan Badel) and, like millions of others of all classes, equally a victim of changing times. Unfortunately, author Mercer seems, finally, to have little to tell us beyong the already well-certified fact that it was all very nasty. A large supporting cast is excellent.moreless
