  • Valentine, the "one-shilling dentist", finds himself involved with the eccentric Clandon family, and his problems are solved by a philosophical waiter.

Shaw's enchanting comedy was apparently written simply to provide its author with a financial success, but he took good care to include many nuggets of philosophical truth amongst the excellent jokes. Robert Powell - six months after his famous performance as Jesus Christ - is fine as Valentine, the dentist with proto-feminist opinions (including the view that men and women should be friends as well as lovers); but the star of the show is Cyril Cusack as the nameless waiter who ties up all the loose ends - and has all the best lines. Warren Clarke, some years before finding TV fame, is Mr. Bohun, the fearsome lawyer who turns out to be the waiter's son.moreless
