      • Robert Shaw was a stern critic of adaptations of his novels, but expressed admiration for this production and for the acting of Mason, Howard and Basehart. However, he preferred the British TV version, "The Pets" - perhaps because he wrote the adaptation himself and played one of the two British airmen (Sean Connery was the other).

      • Robert Shaw's novel was also the basis for another TV play (not using the same script) two or three years later, shown on British television under a different title, "The Pets". The reason for the title-change was that, at the time, a long-running cop show entitled "No Hiding Place" was very popular, and ITV drama chiefs were worried that viewers wouldn't make the distinction.

      • This episode was filmed in 1965 under the title Situation Hopeless.....But Not Serious and starred Alec Guinness as Frick and Robert Redford as Wilson.
