"Charizard Chills"
Grade: A
So after a whole season of Charizard treating Ash like a piece of ****, he finally grows up. This episode was a turning point for Ash because at this point of time, he could finally have control over quite possibly his most powerful Pokemon (except Pikachu perhaps), and as a result was a fine episode of Pokemon.
The episode begins with Ash, Misty, and Tracey riding Lapras on the water, when they bump into another trainer named Tad and tells him he knows Ash from the last gym he battled. Tad tells him he's trying to get into the Pokemon League from earning the Orange League badges as well and wants to challenge Ash for a battle to show his skills.
Ash uses Pikachu, whilst Tad uses a Poliwrath. Poliwrath is very powerful, as its shown with his championship belt. Ash thinks that he is advantaged with Pikachu due to water being weak to electric, but when Ash tells Pikachu to use Thunderbolt on it, Poliwrath is able to dodge his attacks, and when he actually gets hit by one, it seems unaffected. Poliwrath counters this by using Hypnosis and Water Gun and beats Pikachu, claiming his Poliwrath is a much higher level than Pikachu.
After Tad tells him winning is all about power and surprise, Ash sends out (much to Misty and Tracey's disgust) Charizard to try and counter it. Charizard of course doesn't listen to Ash and burns him with a Flamethrower. Poliwrath attempts to attack Charizard with a Water Gun, and Charizard just flies around and uses Flamethrower on Poliwrath with no effect. Tad decides to end the battle once and for all by using Ice Beam on Charizard, in which Charizard is hit, almost completely frozen (apart form his flame tail) and paralysed as a result. Meanwhile, Team Rocket notice the battle and use this time to make a plan to capture Pikachu.
Ash runs to Charizard and tries to break the ice with a rock. Later at night, he tells Charizard that he needs to stay calm if he wants to help him get better. Charizard tries to breathe fire but he is still too weak. He tries to warm up Charizard by keeping him next to a fire and warming him up with his own hands. Charizard notices its flame tail and panics, knocking him out cold again. The whole night, Ash talks to Charizard and tells him about when he first got him as a Charmander, and how he raised it up to Charmeleon and then Charizard. He admits that he's not the greatest Pokemon trainer, and has made plenty of mistakes before, but at this point of time he just wants Charizard to be healthy and safe (and even tells him that he can burn his face with flamethrower once healed again if he wants). Pikachu joins in to help Ash as well to get Charizard better.
The next morning, Ash wakes up and sees Charizard looking at the ocean and roaring, indicating he is alot better. However, Team Rocket cause an explosion and capture Pikachu in a drill machine. Tad comes and sees this, and the drill goes underground. With Charizard allowing Ash to help, Ash jumps on Charizard and follows them. Charizard stops the machine with his legs and Ash tells him not to burn it, as this would hurt Pikachu. Charizard decides to rip open the machine with his feet, gets Pikachu out, and uses Dragon Rage to get rid of Team Rocket.
Ash is glad that Charizard is listening to him, and Tad wants another battle. This time, Ash wins with Charizard due to listening to him use the Seismic Toss attack and avoiding Poliwrath's Ice Beam. The episode ends with Ash accidently knocking Charizard off his feet while he was scratching himself, making him mad and want to use flamethrower on all of them, with Ash jokingly saying "he can take the heat!".
This episode was touching, and also showed Ash growing up, and understanding that although he's not perfect, he must make sure his Pokemon feel comfortable with being his trainer. I felt this episode was important for this reason, and overall well structured and written in terms of Charizard understanding how much of a **** he's been to Ash (He made him lose the Pokemon League!) and wanting to change his ways as a result.moreless
