  • May and Max disband from Ash's group... Wait, what?!!

    8.5
Picking up where the last episode left off, Ash and May have entered the final round of a Pokémon Contest in Terracotta Town, where Sceptile and Blaziken (which evolved from Combusken in the previous episode) end up tying for first place. The gang's celebratory dinner is interrupted with May's announcement that she will be going to the Jhoto region to participate in Pokémon Contests there and as such, she and Max (who is to return to Petalburg City) will be disbanding from the group. Following some encouraging words from Ash, the two part ways. During the return to Palette Town, Ash and Brock also part ways. After the usual scuffle with that idiotic trio Team Rocket, Ash and his long-time rival Gary do battle with Pikachu Vs. Gary's new Electivire; naturally the latter wins. The next day, Ash sets off with Pikachu to the Sinnoh region, leaving all his Pokémon with Professor Oak (save Aipom) much like he did before Hoenn.

The episode is your typical story arc finale; the group disbands, Ash and Gary battle, and Ash sets off the next day to continue his Pokémon journey. The disappointing part of the episode is the fact that it's May's final regular appearance in the anime. Brock leaves to, but we know all to well that he'll be back, whereas May is in a situation where she would not be returning beyond a few episodes, much like what happened to Misty. Unlike a lot of other characters in the series, May has had a lot more character development and as such, it's harder to see her go. If anything, Brock's character should have been killed off, as his role in the anime has greatly diminished since the start of the Hoenn story arc; even if he serves as support for the others, he needs to take a more active role in the series if he's to stay and he should dump the womanizing antics. Feelings towards Max's departure are neutral. Furthermore, it's pretty obvious why Aipom tagged along with Ash, because it would later evolve into its new evolution, Ambipom.

As for the episode, it was decent, but most of the good/important stuff was restricted to the first half, while the second half is just another battle where the outcome is predictable. But overall, not a bad season finale, even though the series won't quite be the same without May.

  • Despite my score this episode is really just okay.

    8.4
Well this episode disappointed me. I really thought I would be saddened at the departure of everyone. Instead, I felt relieved. (This might have to do with my hatred of the new VA's.) I really didn't think Ash and May should have tied. I also don't like the VA's of Tracey and Delia. I wish it was done differently, but I did like the ending story overall despite the few flaws. I also liked Ash's battle with Gary who now has an Electivire. ( I only hate this because my proposal letter to GameFreak to add a steel evolution to Pinsir was ignored.) Overall however I'm still hooked and I can't wait for the next season.moreless

The episode begins with the ending of Ash and May competition togeather, at the end they both won the fight, when Nurse Joy was handing out the medals, she thought there would only be one winner instead of two so Ash splits the medal in half with one of his pokemon and gives one peice to May while he keeps the other. May and Max decide to leave so Max can start to be a trainier while May starts off to fight in another league. Brock decides to go his seperate way as well so he can visit his family again. Mean while as Ash was walking back to Pallet Town, he finds out that Team Rocket was trying to steal one of Gary's pokemon "Electirive" after the battle it ends up of Team Rocket getting Blasted off again. After Ash saw Gary's pokemon fight, he wanted to battle, but Gary said he'll battle him later. When Ash comes home he finds out that every one threw him a suprise party to welcome him back. After everyone ate Ash wanted to battle Gary. Unfortunatly for Ash, he lost and Gary won. After the battle Gary leaves the party and goes back to the Sinnoh region. Proffesor Oak hands Ash a new pokedex and watches Ash set sail for a new journey to the Sinnoh region.moreless
