Episode Summary

Ash and friends finally arrive at Veilstone City. In the forest outside the town, they witness a battle between a female martial-artist and a Lucario. The girl is revealed to be Maylene, the Gym Leader of the city. They also encounter a guy named Reggie, who just happens to be Paul's older brother! He reveals that Maylene does not feel up to battling due to her crushing defeat at the hands of Paul. Her lack of confidence has caused tensions between her, her Lucario, and her trainees. Knowing what she is going through, Dawn decides to go talk to Maylene, while Ash and Brock go to Reggie's house. In order to train Ash and Reggie decide to have a battle. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is planning on stealing Maylene's Lucario.moreless

Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • awesome episode

Finally at Veilstone City, Ash & co. meet the gym leader of the town Maylene. Ash hastily challenges her to a gym battle, to which she declines as she has lost faith in herself due to her recent loss to Paul. Her Lucario is angered by this, and Paul's brother arrives to help out...

Sumomo is just awesome and her Lucario was as well. I love how it kept firing Aura Spheres at her and she just deflects them (I wonder how she does that? I mean, you can't just brush away something like that...). Reiji is also a very interesting character. He seems to be a lot nicer than Shinji.moreless
  • A very good epi

A very good epi. if you ask me. In the beginning I think they showed the Team Galactic building; the one that looked like it had alot of spikes and satillites around it. Anyways, Lucario's voice was perfect, as for Maylene I thought she would have a more younger voice, but no complaints. Ash and Reggie's battle was pretty exciting, and the Brave Bird move looked absolutely destructive (which it is). o o o o o o o o o oooooooo 7 7 7 7 7 77 7 7 7 7 7 7 777777 7 7 7 7 7 7 7moreless
  • loved it!

it is a classic battle episode! the way they had brave bird was amazing! pikachu was great. and i didnt think ash was using staravia in battles n e more till now... isnt dawn supposed to be in some kind of depression... didnt seem like it... paul is so mean but that way he brings out the best in ash. how could he tell a gym leader that they r weak. shes only been a gym leader for six months! but i still think hes, come on maylene! u lost 1 little gym battle. a lot of gym leaders lose. look onthe bright side... dawn lost twice! and shes still handling it better than u! but its still a great episode!moreless
  • Of all the writings and the characters' voices that did excellent in this episode, only one that made this episode so special and feel original again when I read and found out that Rachael Lillis - the original VA of Misty & Jessie - has return!moreless

What I said above in my summary is true, Rachael Lillis - the original VA from 4Kids Entertainment that voiced Misty and Jessie from Season 1 to 8 (she stopped voicing when Pokemon USA took over the series at the speical 10th anniversary "The Mastermind Of Mirage Pokemon" episode then the beginning of Season 9: Battle Frontier two seasons ago) has come back to the series and voiced for the Veilstone City's gym leader Maylene. I can talk about other excellent efforts this episode had offer us new and old Poke Fans to enjoy, but for hardcore old-school Poke Fans like me (don't forget I grew up with the series from the beginning - an era where myself and all other fans knows a lot about Misty and other memorable favorites from those days) can really enjoy listening Rachael's voice again. I can only say this is a sign of the return to enjoy the Pokemon show like in the old days, but I can't because I am, like everyone else too, are not too sure how long Rachael is staying in the series; I'm not saying we won't have this chance to enjoy Pokemon and feel young again. Having Rachael back into voice-acting again is wonderful and yet that's the problem, I don't know if she is willing to stay in the series not because she is still contracted to 4Kids Entertainment but because if she wants to. I have read everyone's blogs from another website and they say Veronica Taylor - another original VA of Ash and Delia Ketchum - will be happy to return to the series but she won't unless she is given to voice Ash and his mother again; she won't accept just voicing other characters and Pokemons - sounds to me she is desperate to voice Ash again and, for once, I don't blame her. I have nothing against Sarah Natochenny's voice for Ash, believe me she is improving well but cannot be equal to Vernoica's voice - this is from a old-school fan you're reading this, it hurts but true. Well, I could be very wrong what I just said here though, maybe I might be. Any fan expresses this way just to show how sad and disappointed when the incident took place after 4Kids Entertainment dropped the licencing for the show and let Pokemon USA take over the dub business. Perhaps someday these news will change dramatically otherwise instead commenting like this way for we all have different opinions because we love, nourish, enjoy and grew up with Pokemon, and perhaps someday, like having Rachael Lillis back in the series, we can all hope Veronica Taylor and all the other original VAs from 4Kids Entertainment are welcomed back to the show where they belong - that's a true meaningful comment from a old-school and current Pokemon fan telling you all. Pokemon 4 Ever!moreless
  • Ash and the gang has finally reached Veilstone City for Ash's next Gym battle, but the Gym leader Maylene is feeling a little down now after losing to Paul.............

WOW!!! Ash and the gang has finally reached Veilstone City for Ash's next Gym battle, however the Gym leader Maylene is feeling down as she lost to Paul, as he used Honchkrow for her first two Pokemon Meditite and Machoke, then he used Magmar for beating Lucario!!! After winning the Cobble badge, he HAD to be so mean and saying she is the weakest Gym leader he had ever fought! That is sooooooooo mean!!! Luckily, in this episode I found out that Dawn and Maylene are soooooo alike as they both lost their confidence like Dawn losing Pokemon contents while Maylene loses Gym battles...... Meanwhile, in this episode we have seen Paul's older brother whose name is Reggie who is SOOOOO different from Paul. How different??? Well, he is much nicer and kinder to people and Pokemon unlike Paul........And, he wanted to have a battle with Ash as well and Ash won in the end! So Reggie wanted to teach Ash's Staravia Brave Bird. That is soooooo nice of him. Finally, do I recommend this episode???? Yup, as this episode is where Ash is going to have his third Gym battle soon and Dawn is going to have a Gym battle with Maylene soon!!! Wow, who will win in the end??? Find out in the next episode!!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Reggie has all of the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh Gym Badges, as well as 6 of the 7 Battle Frontier symbols.

    • It is revealed in a flashback that Paul beat Maylene and has won the Cobble Badge. It is also revealed that his Murkrow has evolved into Honchkrow, he now has a Magmar, and he left his Electabuzz with Reggie.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Maylene: It used to be fun, whenever I won or lost.
Dawn: Yeah, I know. I only lost twice and now, I'm just not sure what to do anymore. Sometimes, I feel like my contests are just holding back Ash from his dreams.
Maylene: And sometimes, I feel like I'm just causing trouble for Lucario and my students.

    • Maylene: I just can't be a gym leader feeling like this, especially after what Reggie's younger brother said to me.
Dawn: Uhh, that's just the kind of guy Paul is. Don't let it bother you!

    • Ash: Check out how she's deflecting those Aura Spheres!
      Dawn: Aura Spheres?
Brock: It's a mysterious power some say everyone has, but I've heard it's stronger in some people than in others.
