Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back
AIRED:
In some ancient ruins, scientists from Team Rocket recover an eyelash from the ancient Pokémon Mew. In a laboratory on New Island, they use it to clone Mew and create the world's most powerful pokémon – Mewtwo. Mewtwo is infuriated at how the scientists want to use him and proceeds to destroy the lab and everyone inside. Giovanni himself lands and tells Mewtwo he can help him control his power. However, their little arrangement does not last long before Mewtwo destroys his lab and goes back to New Island. Meanwhile, Ash, Misty, and Brock are having a seaside lunch when a trainer comes by and wants a battle. Ash agrees and easily beats him, causing a Dragonite to appear and offer him a invitation to the visit the world strongest trainer on New Island. Ash accepts, but due to a storm the boats to the island have been cancelled. Ash, along with a few other trainers brave the storm and cross the ocean storm and land on New Island. There, the world's strongest trainer reveals himself to be none other then Mewtwo. Mewtwo. Mewtwo is planning on destroying the world with his storm, and the only ones who will survive will be himself and wild Pokémon. Ash and the other trainers try to resist, but Mewtwo captures all of their pokémon and clones them. Mewtwo then pits his army of clones in an all out brawl against the other trainers, while he confronts what he believes to be the cause of his problems: Mew. Now Ash and the other trainers must stop the horrible fight between the pokémon and their clones and save the world.moreless

  • Who am I? What is my true reason for being?

    8.0
I recall seeing this in the theaters, back in the day. I liked it then. I still like it now.

The animation is more detailed than what we've seen in the cartoon on TV, but that's to be expected. The story is more detailed and meaningful as well. During the late episodes of the first season of Pokmon, we saw glimpses of a powerful Pokmon used by Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket.

That Pokmon was Mewtwo. Cloned from a mysterious, ancient Mew, it was made, supposedly, more powerful than the original. Through lies and deceit, it was made to serve human purpose.

All good things come to an end, though: Mewtwo escapes, betrayed and hurt, and plans to make a new world in his own image. As the most powerful Pokmon in the world, there is nothing to stop him. To clone his own army of stronger, better Pokmon, he summons trainers he deems fit for this purpose - although the trainers are not of great importance, obviously.

The story is touching, although near the end it feels a bit to drawn out; Pokmon battling their copies, same images shown over and over again. It made me wonder whether I missed something near the end, like some great piece of wisdom, but I think they went with a child-like turn of events eventually; the villain realizes his mistake and peace is once again restored.

Either way, this is a good movie, and for the fans of Pokmon it is a true treasure. Also, who can resist the awesome cuteness of Mew?moreless
  • The movie where Ash dies!

    "Mewtwo Strikes Back"

    Grade: A-

I remember seeing this movie at the cinema when I was a kid, and to be honest I still think it's pretty good. It was one of the darker moments of Pokemon where Mewtwo was the most powerful Pokemon and literally was evil. My favourite scene in the whole movie is near the end, where Ash sacrifices himself to the attacks of Mew and Mewtwo to try and prevent them from fighting anymore. He is killed in the blast after being turned to stone, and as Pikachu tries to revive him with electric attacks, he realises he's dead and starts to cry. The other Pokemon start to cry as well, due to realising what Ash has done to try and save them. Ash is revived by the tears, and Mewtwo realises that both Pokemon and Humans need each other and concludes that it's best for everyone's memories of the incident to be erased. Overall, a good movie, and still gets me into tears, even now as an adult!moreless

  • good cartoon Movie

    10
This was a good animated movie at the time when Pokemon first started. This movie came to theaters one year after the sieries started. This Movie was only in theaters a short time. I still remember seeing it shortly after it came to theaters. You had to buy tickets two hours before the show. and when you bought a ticket each person got a free pokemon card. It was greate. one of the best animated movies of the 90s. Today it still airs on tv as part of cartoon networks cartoon theater. it is a really good movie. It is a movie that every pokemon fan should see. It may not be the best but it made pokemon popular.moreless
  • While it's clearly not the best pokémon movie it's average.

    7.5
I have seen this film many times. While I like this movie it isn't that good or done the same way as the other pokémon movies or specials. The movie could have been better. There were many enjoyable parts to this movie such as mewtwo and mew fighting along with the clones fighting the originals. The corny jokes even had me smirking a bit. However there were also a lot of bad parts. Of course these bad parts may have been enjoyable to you or maybe not. I didn't like them. The one thing I didn't like is how Team Rocket is never really fully utilized thus being the case with most of the movies where they take a back seat and do nothing. Why doesn't this happen more often in actual episodes where I'd like an episode where Team Rocket isn't in it at all. Some other things include obvious dubbing errors, some of the story got bad and didn't seem to be as good as some of the other movies, while other parts are just not very well executed. While clearly this isn't the best pokémon movie it's averagemoreless
