The Secret
AIRED:
The Pole Position truck breaks down outside the tiny town of Vanity, where Dan gets help from a girl named Susan who seems to like him. But while Susan is friendly, the local sheriff certainly isn't, first forcing the team to move their truck outside city limits, then falsely nabbing Dan for speeding. When he frames and arrests Tess for stealing from the town gold mine, the kids are determined to figure out what he's hiding. They send Kuma off in Roadie to distract the mayor and sheriff while they investigate. Inside the mine they discover a pile of stolen gold, and barely get everyone out before the sheriff blows it up to destroy the evidence.moreless

      • (Dan introduces himself to Susan:)
ROADIE: What about me? Nobody ever introduces me!
        SUSAN: What's that?
DAN: Oh, it's my radio. Must be a loose connection.
ROADIE: (tries to talk but Dan muffles him)
SUSAN: Wow, this is some car! Did you design it?
        DAN: I sure did!
        ROADIE: (clears his "throat")
DAN: Well, I had a lotta input.
ROADIE: (sings) Oh my darlin', oh my darlin', oh my darlin' Clementine...
DAN: (thumps his hand on Roadie) Heh, I've got to get that radio fixed!

    • NOTES (4)

      • This episode was released as a single-episode tape by Karl-Lorimar / Kideo Video.

      • Uncle Zachary's statement about driving through Vanity 10 years ago is interesting taken alongside his revelation in #12, "Shadow of a Trout". Is it possible he wasn't always in a wheelchair? (Of course, with Pole Position's technology at his disposal he could easily have access to a vehicle equipped exclusively with hand controls.)

      • This episode answers the question of how Daisy goes to school while travelling around as part of Pole Position: Roadie and Wheels double as her teachers.

      • The dialogue indicates that this episode takes place in California, though the town of Vanity is fictional. For the truly obsessed: When Dan takes Susan on a drive, they pass a highway 49 sign. California 49 is a real road, numbered after the year 1849, that passes through many of the historic gold mining parts of the state.
