In this episode we get a rare glimpse of Nick's inner feelings for his friends. He rarely shows emotion towards anything, but in this episode he opens up to Derek.
With Philip thinking of leaving, Nick is mad that he would leave after only a few months of being back. Derek manages to work out why Nick is so mad with Philip.
The reason is that Nick has never had a stable family in his life. His father beat him, and his brother left him at a young age. Nick sees the Legacy as his home now, so he views Philip's departure as losing another brother.

Chilton Crane, who plays Caroline in the flashback scene, would later appear in the second season episode Rough Beast as Anne Lasker, Tracy Lasker's mother.
