  • Child Abuse From Beyond The Grave

    8.0
A wealthy man is accused of brutally beating his own son, even through the man swears that it was the work of some unseen supernatural entity.

Initially, the Legacy team (and thus the audience) is unsure whether or not this is a supernatural case or not. This is wise move on the part of the writers, because it allows for the Legacy to conduct an investigation (which we get to see), and it also allows for some important character development, especially with Nick.

We learn that Nick's father -- well respected in Legacy circles -- was often a brute to his wife and children. The physical and (as we learn in later episodes) emotional abuse that Nick suffered at the hands of his father, prompts him to believe that their is nothing supernatural at work here.

Naturally, their is a supernatural element at play here (a young ghost boy is beating up his half-brother)

and the father agrees to sacrifice his own life, to save the life of his son.

This is actually a clever way to end the episode because it doesn't wrap up the story with a cliche "happy ending" for everyone involved.

The Legacy members ensure that the boy is safe from the angry ghost, but are unable to save everyone involved.

A boy is safe from the ghost, but he will grew up without his father. A wife his now a widower and a

grandfather will have the mourn the loss of his son. Within the Legacy itself, defeating the angry ghost came with a price.

Derek learns that two good friends of his were (at best) not going to be winning any "Father Of The Year" award, and (in the case of Nick's Dad) were brutalizing their children.

  • Shockingly revealing

    8.9
From the minute the team takes on the case of a child baring the mark of the sacrificial lamb, you get the feeling something's wrong with Nick. It's normal for him to be sceptical about paranormal causes but this time he's angry up to the point where the others are wondering what's up with him. He seems certain the father abuses the boy.

Even when Rachel witnesses a strange attack in the hospital on the boy he's reluctant to agree on a ghost causing this. Later he tells Derek why. His father Jonathan and Derek had been colleagues and friends but nobody knew what a mean drunk his father was and that he used to beat up Nick and his mother. Derek never had any idea and consoles the young man.

Later on it's revealed that the ghost attacking the boy is the deceased son of the father, given up for adoption to an abusive family and wants to revenge by beating up his halfbrother. In the end the father sacrifices himself to save his still alive son.moreless
