  • Allusions

    • During Carmen's bathroom meeting, one of the nerds held a sign that said, "Bring Back Freaks & Geeks". Freaks and Geeks was an NBC dramedy about the unpopular kids in school, sadly it was canceled after its first season. Ironically, fans often compare both shows as being similar.

    • Carmen's baby carriage falling down the steps is an reference to the 1925 Russian film Bronenosets Potyomkin (The Battleship Potemkin) which featured a famous sequence of a baby carriage falling down a set of steps.

    • The British nanny who abuses the babies is an allusion to the British au pair Louise Woodward, who was convicted of killing her infant charge by shaking him to death.
The case got international attention and had parents installing things like Nanny-cams like the one Nic and Mary Cherry use.

    • Carmen and Lily name their baby Hilaryswank. This is a reference to the movie Boys Don't Cry, in which Hilary Swank had a buzz cut and played a transgendered individual. At the time, Hilary Swank was married to Chad Lowe, who starred as Sam's journalism supervisor in the first season.
