The 50's drag race plot worked. It's in the vein of 'kids show lesson', but never got too hammy. It was just fun. Although the monster of the week didn't really have an impact on that plot, it blended well enough as not to be a distraction. Part of that of course is that the source Sentai footage is pretty cool in this season. Admittedly, watching modified high power go karts blasting down open roadways is a lot of fun.
Perhaps this is a good example of turbo done right, but without some of the moving parts from Zeo, it still can't manage to be quite as good. Alpha 6 of course being the prime example. The personality and voice aren't as good. It's a minor thing in this episode, but just a small reminder. Bulk and Skull as chimps aren't as effective as the actors either of course. Additionally, while Divatox and crew aren't necessarily terrible, there was a certain chemistry in the Zedd family that brought a lot to the table, even if they're a side plot sitting in their winnebago.
In any case, if you're going to watch some Turbo, this is a fair episode to spend time on.
