Episode Summary

EDIT
Tommy's having strange dreams, reminding him of his encounter with True Of Heart during the Zeo Quest. This restlessness for answers to his riddles becomes a central issue, for when the Zeo Megazord is crippled in battle with an energy-leeching Main Drain monster, Tommy must put his emotions in order to successfully pilot the new Red Battlezord. But will an oddly familiar indian man named Sam Trueheart hold the key to Tommy's inner calmness, by directing him to a secret from his past? Meanwhile, Bulk & Skull dream of winning a trip to Hawaii, but find their raffle-ticket-selling attempts foiled by a mysterious man called Delmar.moreless

  • Worth your time, but balance issues hold it back

    8.0
Tommy's search for the arrowhead is a solid plot which manages to avoid filler in general through these four episodes. Unfortunately, the mix of English footage vs. Sentai footage suffers some real balance issues.

In the previous 'Snow business' arc, the monsters had little thematic relation to the story, but had a purpose in the 'A superhero can't lead a normal life' plot thread. It worked reasonably well there. In this case, the monsters feel tacked on with little purpose but to confuse Tommy's emotions. The arc as a whole might have in this case benefitted better by keeping the focus on Tommy at the expense of Sentai footage. A journey through the caves to face his demons, or a standoff one on one with the main villain would have been more effective than three random monsters for the rangers to fight.

Still, while these issues keep this arc from being a true classic, it is still very good and worth your time. This is largely due to the lack of any 'bad' moments throughout. The Bulk and Skull plotline continues to be entertaining. There are no meaningless subplots, just monster battles. The rangers remain focused on Tommy's journey and tend to take a backseat. This frees up what screen time is left after the fights to spend entirely on Tommy. As a result, his journey has time to breath properly.

In conclusion, an above average set of episodes, but not the best of the best.moreless
