Episode Summary

EDIT
Believing himself to be the king of the Machine Empire, Tommy prepares to face Jason in the arena. The other Rangers try to join his side, but are unable to, until they get help from an unlikely source, their old enemies, who are now the enemy of their new enemies. Even if the spell on Tommy can be broken, getting out of the monster-filled arena safely will require the aid of an even more unlikely source, Earth's self-proclaimed "greatest warriors", Bulk & Skull, who join forces with a captive alien warrior seeking revenge on Prince Gasket for conquering his home planet of Horath.moreless

One of the better early Power Rangers arcs overall keeps it relatively simple but powerful. The arena set piece is excellent and sets a distinct mood that the usual stock beach filming in other episodes can't match. The arena is filled with monsters from the past cheering and jeering as crowd members. The whole scene sets a kind of classic intensity where the drama plays out. It works, very well. Instead of ever degrading into pointless fights, the stand-off is strictly between Tommy and the Rangers. It is a psychological battle more than it ever is a physical one. Admittedly, the moment where the pink ranger hugs tommy is powerful enough to be a tear jerking moment. It all works.

Bulk and Skull continue to be handled really well this season, going on a side mission in the same arena complex with a batman sounding alien to destroy the power generator. Rita fainting is an awesome moment. One thing i really would have wanted to see is more significance made of the Rangers human identities being made to an arena of the machine empire. I suppose it is fair to assume that their identities are already known, and the plot point is never really extended upon any way. Still, the Rangers are secret to the human population at large. It's a lost point, but not really a hinderance on this excellent episode. Really, this is one of the best.moreless
