  • Time Force-Lightspeed Rescue teamup, a good episode, just not a very good teamup. Vypra returns from the dead to raise a Super-Demon and enlists the help of Ransik. In order to combat the joined evil forces, Lightspeed and Time Force team up.moreless

I love teamups. Episodes like Forever Red, To the Tenth Power, and Thunderstorm are prime examples of why I watch this series. However, Time for Lightspeed doesn't rank very high on the average fan's list of favorite teamups, and I myself can say the same.

Now, had Time for Lightspeed not been a teamup, maybe the fandom would have liked it better, because really the storyline, on its own, is not that bad. The problem is that the episode creates some plot holes that the Time Shadow could fly through. For example, how is it that Vypra, who was last seen being absorbed by Queen Bansheera, is buried in a grave as though she were dead? How did Dana manage to become a doctor in the space of a year when she was struggling to even get through med school at the end of the previous season? Answers to these questions can be conjured by fans, but none of them are official and the episode would have been better if the writers could have found the time to answer some of the questions.

Another thing...time. Many of the teamups before this were two parts. For some reason, the Time Force-Lightspeed Rescue teamup was only one. Because of the allotted time, there were many events that were quite rushed. The only one of the Lightspeed Rangers to get even a decent amount of screen time is Carter, with the other four Lightspeed Rangers each being treated to a thirty-second clip revealing their post-Lightspeed endeavors. Ryan, the Titanium Ranger? He comes onto the battlefield seconds before the morphing scene with absolutely no backstory and no explanation concerning how Eric was able to find him. Ryan is one of my favorite characters and I was extremely disappointed at the lack of a scene of his own.

Is the episode bad? No. It's definitely got a fun battle scene, trimmed down at the end due to the post-9/11 scare. But on the scale of teamups, it fails to impress, especially in comparison to To the Tenth Power and Reinforcements from the Future, and one must wonder why the episode couldn't have focused more on the Rangers who manged to repel a demon invasion last season.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • Kelsey's Grandmother Winslow (from PRLR's "The Fifth Crystal") was credited for this episode, but didn't appear (she was to be taking part in the extreme sports contest Kelsey was part of).

    • Whatever Wes and Carter saw to convince them they were in the right place is missing (presumably a column of energy) from the scene.

    • INCORRECTLY REGARDED AS A GOOF: Dana is now a doctor, despite having not even gotten into medical school by the time PRLR was over, a year ago our time. Who says PR has to obey the physical rules of years we do? Sure, TF is in "2001", but as PRLG proved with its internal decision to pass 5 years time without pushing the year it takes place past LR's "present time" denotation, the perspective of time in fiction is only ruled by the whim of those who work on it... And if you don't like that knowledgable solution, then she's a fast learner when not saving the world, and she had her governmental father pull some strings to get her Doogie Hauser-ly advanced.

    • Vypra was last seen having her life-energy absorbed by Queen Bansheera, leaving no corpse behind to be buried. Yet, she crawls out of a grave with her own tombstone (meaning her body must have been dispelled offscreen, and Diabolico or Jinxer buried it, aware that the closest point to the Shadow World on Earth was a cemetary).

    • When Jen, Lucas, Katie, and Trip were flipping right before destroying the last of Vypra's henchmen, their karate cries weren't their voices. They were those of Dana, Chad, Kelsey, and Joel, respectively.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Vypra: I'm Vypra, Princess of all demons.
Nadira: I don't care if you're the princess of the universe, get out of my chair!!

    • Vypra's incantation to raise Quargenon with the Solar Amulet:
From the deepest shadows far below,
where no mortal will dare to go.
      Only Demons toss and burn.
Now mighty Quarganon, it's your time to return!

    • Joel: (after walking inside the Clock Tower) I thought you guys came from the future. This place looks kinda...old.

  • NOTES (8)

    • Though the episode is completely US footage, the Quarganon costume is from the video Timeranger VS GoGo V.

    • Vypra's Vyprari, last seen (getting destroyed) in "Web War", apparently comes back from the dead along with her.

    • First team-up (in either PR or Sentai) to feature two full 6-Ranger teams, making up a 12 Ranger encounter.

    • It is revealed that Joel's season-long advances towards Ms. Fairweather were ultimately successful; they're recently married, and are about to attend their Honeymoon.

    • Carter will return in PRWF's "Forever Red".

    • The current occupations of Carter, Joel, and Ryan are unknown, but Dana is now a pediatrician, Kelsey a professional extreme-sports athlete, and Chad a lifeguard at the beach.

    • Alison MacInnis was unable to attend filming during the cast-shots at the air-field, so the stunt-double for Nadira stood in for her. She was also unable to do ADR, so Dana's morphed voice (mostly all grunts and karate sounds) was filled in, uncredited, by Catherine Sutherland, who played Pink Ranger Kat back in MMPR-PRT (and was still a friend to the crew).

    • POWER RANGERS LIGHTSPEED RESCUE meets POWER RANGERS TIME FORCE, part one of one.
