This historical drama series still ranks as one of Australia's finest drama series as it won 9 Sammy Awards and 4 Penguins. The show is set in 1890 through to 1950 Melbourne and features Martin Vaughan as a poor John West who is determined make something of himself even if his own life and his family life is severely affected by it. He gains in wealth, power and influence but will it cost him the thing that is most precious to him.

The show also covers historical events that happened in that period of time such as World War One and the formation of the Australian Labor Party. Filming was disrupted due to Unions action as they were not happy how they were being portrayed in the series.

The book by Frank Hardy, from which the series was based, was an alleged account of the life of John Wren whose family tried to stop the book from being published.
