  • Koran's Redemption

    9.7
This is sort of part one in the Redemption arc. One of the things I loved about this season of Sailor Moon and why is one of my favorates is how complex the bad guys seem. In fact some of them aren't really bad guys, we see in reality they really are good people but their misguided souls that have been polluted by evil influences.

What's interesting about this episode is that fact that it's not really a Sailor Scout focused episode it's an episode focused on a villan Koran and it's great because we see her at her most human which makes us feel heavy pathos for her, even though it does focus on Rei and his supposed dopey significant other but that of course is a sub plot to act as a parallel to the real plot which is Koran's pursuit. Poor Koran we see is in love with her Commander Rubus, but unfortunately he just doesn't feel the same way, he just doesn't see her as anything else but a pawn in the game. In one scene we see she does something nice for him but give him a gift, but instead of a kind word back or even a smile he cruely destroys the gift leaving her heartbroken.

Koran then feels the only way to win Rubus's affections is to find Usagi-Chiba and exterminate her herself. She obvously is guilty of having rather misguided views about what love really is. For one thing, when she disguises herself as a makeup saleswoman Rei and Koran have a conversation about the subject. One of those misguided views are Koran feels that looks are the most important that you need to look beautiful to get a guy. But Rei of course wins the argument but saying that looks aren't everything that it's whats in the persons soul that counts the most. Rei of course is right.

Another thing that makes her views misguided is on pursuit itself. She doesn't understand what it really means to pursue and exercise feelings for someone. In a scene where Rei is in danger, her significant other gets in the line of fire and of coruse gets hit many times by Koran's blasts. Koran things what he's done is stupid because the girl he loves doesn't love her back and yet he protects her. But he says, he knows, and that he might not get her or deserve her, but loves her all the same and would do anything for her even if it cost him his life. The difference is his pursuit is a selfless one, Koran's is a rather narrow and selfish one.

The battle was great because it wasn't so much super powered based but one where Rei uses the power of reason to fight her. I always felt that reason was always the true power of the scouts and that the superpowers were always as they should be tools of defense. In once scene which I felt had to of been heartwrenching and I felt the most pathos for Koran at that point was when she asked Rubius for help when she was about to lose, but Rubius coldly discards her as well as her love for him.

Koran we see at that point is heartbroken and just breaks down in emotion and attacks the scouts blindly and wildly though not whole heartedly, she obviously at the point of being sucidal. My favorate moment in the whole episode is supprising when Makoto/Sailor Jupiter is about to knee Koran to knock her out but then Sailor Mars gets in the way and takes the hit for Koran. At that point Sailor Mars get though to Koran, tell her she has a lot to live for and still has a chance at love, and of course Sailor Mars does save Koran and she is redeemed in the end.

That's one of the reasons Sailor Mars is my favorate characters because of the extent of her selflessness. She will also protect people that are either good or possess a quailty of good within them because anything that is good is always worth protecting, pursuing and saving. And that of course is one of the things that love truely is.moreless

    • Rei/Sailor Mars: It's not over Koan you haven't lost everything. You still have yourself. If you believe you were wrong, you can fix it little by little.

    • Koan: Nowhere to go...
      Everyone: What?!
Koan: That's right, I have nowhere to go now. (stands up and looks at the Inner Senchi with tears in her eyes)It's all because of you, it's all your fault!
(goes into a suicidal rage and attacks them but half heartedly.)
Koan: I've lost everything! I've lost my future, my love and even my place to go back to! It's all your fault!

    • Raye: It seems that you don't understand, Usagi. Loving someone means trusting that person. If you don't trust Mamoru anymore, then you no longer have a relationship. It's important to keep on beliving in him, no matter how coldly he treats you back. If you can do that you can get him back.

    • Koan: Why did you protect her even after she treated you so cruelly?
Yuichiro: I can...only show my love in my own way.
Koan: How idotic that girl doesn't give a damn about you.
Yuchiro: That doesn't matter at all!

    • Tuxedo Mask: Love floats like a gossamer. So, when someone speaks of it as an anvil, I know I'm hearing nothing from her heart. (takes Chibiusa safely away from Koan) Farewell.
