This is Part I of the final episode in the Prime Suspect saga. Jane Tennison is dealing with her final case, as she is retiring. A fourteen year old girl has disappeared, and later is found dead. Meanwhile, Tennison is struggling to handle her father, Arnold Tennison, dying and to acknowledge that she is an alchoholic. While going to an AA meeting Jane sees her old nemesis, Bill Otley, who had tried so hard to put roadblocks in her path up the ladder to being the first woman DCI. Otley follows Jane out of the meeting and in a touching scene in a cafe, he apologizes for the harm that he did to her in the past. Bell did a splendid job in this role, one of his last before passing away. Mirren gives a superlative performance as an alcoholic, battle-scarred professional but desparately lonely woman. Mirren allows herself to appear as haggard and in need a long vacation, something most actresses of her caliber would never allow. In the final scene of this first part, Jane has just left the hospital after the death of her father. She is attacked by the suspect in her final case. He ends up shooting Bill Otley, who had becomes Jane's friend and sponser. One is left hoping that Bill lives and concerned for Jane's future.
