    "Great"
The premiere episode of Primeval S5 opens with a bang, as London is in danger of being overrun by giant futuristic insects and the ARC team is suffering from its own, personell problems: Philip is on the war path.
S4 had been largely dominated by Ethan/Patrick Quinn, who is now completely gone, have been served as an apparent red herring in the past. Philip is emerging to be the dominant villian of this season, and why? Because he's a fan of Helen Cutter. Now, I too am a fan of Helen Cutter, I once wrote in the past that whoever will take over her role as the show's number one villian will need to fill some big shoes, but this is getting ridiculous! She's dead, create a new, independent character, not another puppet!
...Well, there's April Leonard. She's working for Philip and seems to be quite an adroit manipulator - but then again, it's Connor, he's not that hard to manipulate, though why couldn't Caroline Steele from S2 come back instead? Guess the script-writers' love of new characters got the best of them, or something. Either way, hopefully with April on his side, Philip will do a good job of Primeval's new villian, though Ethan did quite a good job himself.
One final piece of villany that Philip appears to have on his side is a knighthood. Throughout the greater part of this episode, James Lester sang accolades for Burton, thinking that in this way he might get his own knighthood, while in reality it was for Burton. Poor Lester. Now Philip is going to die, because a knighthood for his rival is something Lester won't tolerate.
While Lester (hopefully) is inventing plans to off Burton, so's Matt, apparently. Fighting a swarm of futuristic insects caused him to accidentallyreveal himself to Abby who now, apparently, decided to help him to stop Philip - and Connor, who is falling increasingly under Philip's control...
Put otherwise, it's the same old, same old in the land of Connor and Abby romance - they love each other, they really do, but can never quite come out and say it to each other, and life just messes with their love: now it's politics!
So, Lester is frustrated, Connor and Abby are at odds, Matt and Philip are making plans... and Jess and Becker were secondary in this episode, I'm afraid. Ah well, hopefully they'll get to shine in the future: Primeval's S5 is off to a great start all the same!moreless

    "Good"
I like this show a lot. It doesn't ask a lot of the viewer but has good action, decent writing and plots and likable characters. And where else are you going to see all this prehistoric carnage? On Dancing with the Stars? Not unless they include Betty White. Over all this was a good ep. I'm looking forward to seeing Connor's seduction to the dark side and how far they go with it. I'm not really interested in the new 'love' plot line that is obviously brewing with his new assistant. "There are OTHER women? I never thought of that. Bye Abby!" Also I was a little underwhelmed/pleasantly surprised that Burton's secret project was aimed at limitless energy for the world and not breeding armies of future predators or some such obviousness. Now his plan will most likely turn out to be evil, but I liked that they've kept that reveal until later while introducing a neat idea worthy of sci-fi. The idea is the implication that if you have portals to multiple worlds (even earth) you can harvest that worlds energy in whatever way you can and use it in this world. Imagine geothermal energy harvesting factories set up on ancient earth volcanoes sending us energy in the present. Free, clean, limitless energy, and all the factories would presumably decompose long before our ancestors came on the scene to learn too much too early. Anyway, this will further ensnare Connor since he thinks the project is a good thing. Although in the trailer for the season you can see a quick shot of millions of bugs or something spilling through the machine so it's not all good! The one major thing I disliked in the episode reminds me of the Sliders ep where Quinn and Maggie slide onto a blade runner looking world and Quinn says "We must have slide to the future" even though they've made it clear from day one that sliding isn't time travel! This world could be more advanced than ours, but it takes place in the same time frame. This was an oversight in the writing that could have been fixed. What got me here was Abby's conclusion that there is no sign of the creatures in the fossil record so they must be from the future, and since what's his name knew about them, he must be from the future too. WTF? She's a zoologist! If they're not in the fossil records, they simply may not have been discovered yet, or more likely, none of their remains ever survived long enough to be fossilized. Millions of species have come and gone on this planet over millenia that we will never have any concept of or idea of because nothing survives of them. They are lost to the past. For all the fossils we do have, our collections represent a minute portion of the species that have existed on this planet. It's like looking at a fallen log and thinking all that exists is on the surface bark and ignoring what lies inside or what may have passed through undetected. My point is I hate this oversight, it was simply a way to get her to catch on to future guy and enter into a partnership with him instead to making any actual sense, it was a lazy plot device. Otherwise I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. It's fun, and if they can steer clear of glaring errors like this, it will all the better sci-fi.moreless
