  • Philip launches 'New Dawn' - will Matt and his team be able to stop him in time?

    8.5
After watching the penultimate episode of Primeval S5, my first thought was - James Lester, why didn't you succeed? Or, in more neutral terms, Murphy's Law, where were you?

Philip. He honestly believes that by drawing all of the time anomalies into one single mega-time anomaly, all will be saved? Right, and where will all of those chronologically displaced animals - dinosaurs, pterosaurs, mammoths, etc- go? They'll be stuck in modern London, and do what startled and frightened animals best - attack anything that scares them, i.e everyone. In S4, Philip proved to be not the biggest fan of animals around, so why does he now want them to stay? Is he planning to put them into a petting zoo and become even richer?

And why Matt didn't ask him that? Seriously, has everyone in the Arc & Prospero forgot about them? After all, in the last episode, the first artificial time anomaly brought forth a swarm of futuristic beetles - surely someone should've remembered that? But probably not Matt - he stunned a T-Rex of all the creatures, and... apparently let it lie there, before venturing forth for new adventures. Definetly an Aries as far as zodiac goes, that's for sure.

Of course, the rest of the ARC team appear to have supported his decision unanimously, so, perhaps, Becker's uncertain fate is deserved (the last we saw of him, he and his men were confronting something unseen that possessed a very loud roar - maybe that same T-Rex), but one thing remains unclear in regards to him: when did he jump onto Matt's team? Until ep. 4, everyone was pretty much avoiding him and Jess. When did Matt bring the two of them into the fold? No answer is forthcoming, it seems.

So, Philip's an idiot, Matt's another, Becker may be dead, and Lester kicked a dinosaur's ass, when it harassedhis car. To compare, Abby stunned a Kaprosuchus(yeah, the same model from ep 4x02) to save Connor. Ergo, Lester cares for his car like he would care for another person, and he cares for people as if they were inanimate objects. Well, at least he's loyal to the ARC and isn't fully on Team Matt just yet - in lieu of Matt's recent idiocy it is a good thing.

As for the rest of the episode, well, Connor lost a technological duel to Philip and got sucked into a time anomaly (hopefully, he won't end up in the Cretaceous like he and Abby did at the end of S3), and the script writers killed April off. Guess she's no longer important - that's depressing. At least Christine Johnson from S3 had been annoying and troublesome.

So, stupid heroes, stupid villians, a plot hole or two, a cliffhanger ending, unnecessary character deaths - all signs that IP's script writers are getting bored with the show. Hopefully, this season will end with a bang, rather than a whimper, but only time will tell.moreless
