  • An incoherent mess that marked an inauspicious start for season two.

    4.0
Ambition in the Blood is a mess. It commits what may be the cardinal sin in the entertainment world: it is boring. We get a jumbled mix of stories and a heavy handed deus ex machina rescue that stretched credulity too far.

The a-story concerns Sam and the Atlanta police improbably deciding they're charging her with murder. Lou Handelman comes across as clueless and ham-handed; in this plot, we get not one but two amazing rescues. The federal government wants Sam to solve the b-story so they pull off a ridiculous bit of legal mumbo jumbo and "buy her time"; the second bit of nonsense includes Jack sending the police a "full confession" - a bunch of typed onion skin pages with "guilty" stamped in red all over them. And they let Sam go.

The b-story concerns a serial killer who escapes a prison in Calcutta and comes to New York on a killing spree. The b-story is boringly disposable; we get a few scenes of Sam and Coop investigating together, confronting the bad guy and then breaking up. The c-story revolves around Bailey Malone and his messed up teenage daughter Frances. Unfortunately the whole thing is forgettable and includes a ridiculous scene where John Grant and Frances meet up and talk. Atlanta is in the forest and everywhere you look there are pine trees. Atlanta is landlocked and a long way from the sea. In this scene we hear seabirds quite obviously and clearly see palm trees on the road. We get one nice movement in the episde - Malone and John Grant reveal an interesting mentor/student father/son relationship. These characters get a couple nice moments where we see that between them is a genuine professional respect and a real personal bond. Grant realizes he needs Malone as his mentor and sane father figure (something he never had) and Malone realizes he values Grant as a member of his team and as a person.

To sum up: one improbable and almost laughable story and two boring ones. Profiler unfortunately started off season two with its worst feet forward.moreless
