The inverse of Crisis, this episode should work but doesn't. A truck driver is targeting and killing couples by running them off the road. George is injured in a hold-up. Malone has problems with his daughter.
It should all work. The story with George has a potential to really delve into George's character. It somehow misses target. The story with Malone's daughter is the same way – unfortunately the dialog never rises above the cliché of teenage resentment and angst. The truck driver story has potential but just misses the payoff. Diagnosing the problem, it's an episode that's trying to do too much. You've got three potentially weighty stories but with more time none of them delivers the payoff. The gruesome conclusion of the truck driver story – the corpses in the back of the truck – should horrify instead it's icky. Better than episodes earlier in the season, Blue Highway doesn't realize its potential. A more focused approach would have allowed the episode to shine; instead, it muddles along, expertly done but not quite good enough to rise above the average.moreless
