A desperate father kidnaps Sam's roommate Angel in a last ditch effort to save his son from the electric chair. The man's son has recently been convicted of murder committed during a robbery. The father believes his son to be an innocent bystander and wants Sam and the VCTF to prove it. To save Angel, Sam and the VCTF investigate the case and find little, at first, to prove the man correct. The father gives them the names of two potential suspects and Sam interrogates both. She also talks with the incarcerated son. Her discussions, along with forensic evidence, lead Sam to determine the son is in fact innocent of the murder, but is unfortunately an accomplice in the robbery. Once she knows the truth, Sam is faced with the difficult task of telling the father what he least wants to hear, that his son is indeed guilty of a crime.moreless

Some guy takes Angel hostage, demands Sam free his son from jail - cause you know that always works. In an episode that fails in its first 2 minutes, there's not much that can be done.

Season Two started badly. It stumbled badly for the first third of the season. This episode is a perfect example of how those episodes went wrong - too much melodrama and a premise that simply pushes credulity beyond the breaking point.

Breaking Point is a mess - it tries to convince the rest of us that Angel is really in peril, that a dedicated public servant will go over the edge and start kidnapping people. I wanted to like this episode - I really did. The episode's one innovation is a new variation on the "hard headed local cop" is transforming that person into a politically ambitious DA who refuses to help the team.

A series of interviews with Sam and Bailey and a variety of suspects are well written and acted but not enough to elevate the episode above average; the final showdown with Porter and the team with lots of lights and sirens and helicopters and guns pointed at one another and a dramatic lat minute rescue is a melodramatic conclusion to an overwrought episode.moreless
