Season 3 Episode 14

Truer Lies

Aired Friday 10:00 PM Feb 06, 2009 on USA

  • Trivia

    • Gus' Alias: Hollaback Atcha

    • Psych-Out: Gag reel from the the deleted interrogation scene (parts of which could be heard faintly as Chief Vick spoke with the doctor).

    • Wilhelm Scream

The infamous Wilhelm Scream, which is a highly used sound track taken from the 1951 movie Distant Drums, can be heard coming from Tom Lieber's portable game player as Gus, Shawn and the rest of the actors enter the room.

    • Goof: When the bad guys are chasing Gus' car, they shoot open the trunk and the interior is empty. On the next front shot of the car – when they hit the junk – the trunk is closed (which can also be seen in the interior shots of the car), yet when they all get out of the car the trunk is now back open and filled with boxes of drugs samples.

    • Pineapple Spotting: 1st Sighting – A woman at another table in the diner is served a pineapple with its top cut off. 2nd Sighting – Near the end of the episode, when Shawn and Ryan are hiding from the bad guys, Ryan picks up a pineapple from one of the myriad of boxes littering the alley to throw at the bad guys.

  • Quotes

    • Shawn: Oh, come on, Jules. We all tend to bend the truth just a little.
      Juliet: Not me.
      Shawn: Oh, really?
      Juliet: Nuh-uh.
Shawn: Does this ring a bell? No, Shawn, I haven't had any naughty dreams about you. And, yes, Shawn, I do wish Gus was never born so that I could be your partner.
      Gus: What?
      Shawn: True story.
      Gus: That's messed up.
Juliet: I never said that, Gus.

    • Gus: Where's Lieber?
Juliet: Gone. Looks like he's on the lam.
Shawn: If he's on a lamb he won't get far. Alpaca, different story. Those things really fly.

    • Ryan: When you lie does that make you feel important? Because if you keep lying the way you do no one will believe you when it counts.
Shawn: I will slap you in the face.
Ryan: Violence is not the answer.

  • Allusions

    • Shawn: You're not claiming Grimace as a brother.
      Gus: Grimace is a brother.
Shawn: He is an amorphous mass. He's like a big amoeba.
Gus: He's a black amoeba, Shawn.
      Shawn: Purple.
Shawn and Gus argue over Grimace, which was a character in McDonald's ads and videos from the 1970s through the early 2000s. (Incidentally, Grimace was, in fact, purple.)

    • Shawn: Bingo.
      Gus: Don't say "Bingo."
      Shawn: Cranium.
Gus: Now, I'll play some Cranium.

Cranium is a board game created in 1992, which is marketed as "The Game for Your Whole Brain." Gus views himself as more cerebral and grown-up than Shawn. He would be up for Cranium over Bingo.

    • "Lyin' Ryan": Hey, you guys want lunch? You know I own a restaurant downtown. Actually, it's not all mine. I co-own it with Mike Ditka. You guys eat wild game, dontcha?

Mike Ditka was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. He does own three restaurants, two in Chicago and one in Pittsburgh, although they do not feature wild game. His official web site also features links to clothing, resorts, records, cigars, wine, and food products.

    • Gus: Shawn, we are treading on thin ice right now.
Shawn: Yes. But I'm about to do a double axel with a salchow and finish with a sweet little camel-toe.
      Gus: You mean camel spin?
Shawn: I've heard it both ways.

Shawn spins Gus's pessimistic metaphor into a positive reference to competitive ice skating. Axel jumps are quite difficult, requiring years to master. A salchow normally follows a "three turn," not an axel.

    • Lyin' Ryan: (running from gunfire) Serpentine. Serpentine. Zigzag. Hide in here.

This is a reference to the classic 1979 Arthur Hiller film, The In-Laws, starring Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. In the referenced scene, Vince Ricardo (Falk) instructs the hapless Sheldon Kornpet (Arkin) to run in a serpentine pattern to avoid being shot.

    • Shawn: Let me guess: there's a bomb on a bus and if it goes below 50mph the whole thing is going to explode.

This is a reference to a 1994 Jan de Bont film, Speed, starring Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper and Sandra Bullock.

    • When Shawn sees the picture of Ryan and his former Busch Gardens co-worker he says that he thinks he is Koko B. Ware. Koko B. Ware is a former WWF wrestler who would come down to the ring with a macaw on his shoulder.

    • When Shawn questions Tom at the hospital, he asks if Tom had ever been a member of "Treadstone", then changes his mind and tells the patient not to answer. Treadstone is the fictional arm of the CIA which originally employed Jason Bourne of The Bourne Identity.

    • Title: "Truer Lies"

The title is a spoof of the 1994 James Cameron film, True Lies, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.
