Following his unsuccessful collaboration with Ron Gash in Walton, Marker has started over again on his own, this time in Chertsey. But moving costs have risen sharply, putting Frank in short term financial trouble, with more money going out than coming in... After the bank manager agrees only to a paltry overdraft, two shadowy figures await Marker on his return to his office. They press him into finding their errant business partner, Jimmy Knaggs, who they say owes them a lot of money. Frank cannot afford to refuse the case, despite having the feeling that these are south London hard boys, wanting to tear each other up, if they do meet. Marker spots Knaggs in a local pub, but Knaggs realises Marker is following him, and angrily confronts him, leaving Marker on the end of yet another beating. Knaggs contacts Markers clients, telling them to call off the private detective, or else he will kill him. But Frank Marker is not a man to be put off easily, inflicted with a dogged persistence, this time aided by the need to survive financially. To add to Frank's difficulties, his friendly bank manager thinks he needs looking after, and calls in the police to help protect him. But Markers history with the police is full of injustices, and he only harbours suspicion. Can Marker find Knaggs before his clients turn increasingly nasty? And If he does find him, will he be in even more danger? Both from the aggressive Londoners, and maybe also the police? Welcome to Chertsey, Frank...moreless
